ABOUT BOBO
The multi-faceted Sydney based vocalist known as “Bobo” has a unique, intimate style and a presence that reaches out and draws people into her performance. Since completing her studies at the Australian Institute of Music in 2011, where she earned a Bachelor of Music in Contemporary Performance, Bobo’s powerful ear for harmony and her inviting way with a melody has led her to perform at various events and functions held at some of Sydney’s most distinguished venues, including (but not limited to) The Basement, Sydney Opera House, Jonah’s, Dunes Restaurant, James Craig 1874 Tall Ship, The Tea Room QVB, The Mint and The Museum of Sydney. Although she does work with full bands, she can most often be found in an acoustic duo setting with other talented musicians.
Her vocal talents have also been tapped to support live performances and studio recordings by a wide variety of Australian original artists, including James Englund, Frances Madden, Shivon Coelho, Sarah Bird, Harrison, Anikiko and Fiona Joy. In 2014, she and James accompanied Fiona Joy to the U.S., where they recorded originals with five-time Grammy nominated engineer/producer Cookie Marenco. Bobo recorded backing vocals for Fiona’s critically acclaimed album Signature Synchronicity at Imaginary Road Studios, the famed Vermont facility owned and operated by legendary Windham Hill Records founder and Grammy winning guitarist Will Ackerman.
Her eclectic set list is heavily inspired by both the music she heard on road trips she and her brother took with their parents growing up (including legendary artists like Queen, Sting, U2 and Van Morrison) and the progressive musical tastes she cultivated on her own as she discovered artists such as Dido, Iron & Wine, Bon Iver, Simon & Garfunkel, Jessie Ware, Caro Emerald, Sufjan Stevens and John Mayer. Her set lists include classics by everyone from Norah Jones and New Zealand artist Bic Runga to Paul Simon, Kylie Minogue and Fleetwood Mac.
Although she was heavily involved in music on both violin and oboe from a young age, she credits consciously discovering her love for singing to one of her favourite primary school teachers, who granted her a lead role with a solo number in a school musical at age ten. Prior to this, Bobo had been too shy to sing in front of an audience, and admits that the only song she could think of to audition with was the popular lullaby “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”. Despite this early realisation, she didn’t begin formal singing lessons until age 16, when she was enrolled at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts for her two final years of high school.
Over the years, as her career has evolved and diversified, Bobo has developed confidence that comes with experience and a multitude of opportunities to share her vocal gifts and be appreciated for them.
She is currently developing her songwriting abilities, and hopes to share some of her original material in future.
